Day 2 - I Am A Stupid Man

Galloping Goose Trail
Hot dog sized slugs
So I said goodbye to Helen as she headed off to work. Picked up some food at the grocery store and headed down to MEC to grab a can of fuel for my stove and a small lantern for my tent. Its here I discover the compass in my phone is shot. The magnetic sensor can never pick out north reliably. A bit annoying, but the sun can be my compass for the trip I guess.

I get out of downtown to the TCH and discover there is a bike trail that follows it for a ways called the Galloping Goose. Great little trail for sure...Until you stupidly glance at Google maps and think it will connect the whole way up to Nanaimo. Well it actually goes west for 55 km into the woods above Sooke which is where I ended up, distracted by the awesome wilderness and crazy gypsy music I had been given to listen to by a friend.

I eventually found myself in the rain and staring into a giant impassable red gate that may as well have had a sign saying "Ha ha asshole, what now?" Well all I could do at that point was backtrack to the Sooke Potholes camp site and set up my tent under a wooded area by a stream in the pouring rain. Gone the wrong direction and camping in the rain. Not the best way to start my first day outdoors eh?
